The Promise of Deliverance

I will be an enemy to your enemiesand will oppose those who oppose you.

Do not make a covenant with them or with their gods. 33Do not let them live in your land or they will cause you to sin against me, because the worship of their gods will certainly be a snare to you.” Exodus 23

Israel stopped worshiping the LORD and worshiped the idols of Baal and Ashtoreths, as well as the idols of other gods from nearby nations.

The LORD was so angry 14-15with the Israelites that he let other nations raid Israel and steal their crops and other possessions. Enemies were everywhere, and the LORD always let them defeat Israel in battle. The LORD had warned Israel he would do this, and now the Israelites were miserable. Judges 2

All of this happened because the people of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had rescued them from Egypt, where they had been slaves. They worshiped foreign gods, 8followed the customs of the nations that the LORD had forced out of Israel, and were just as sinful as the Israelite kings. 9Even worse, the Israelites tried to hide their sins from the LORD their God.

They…disobeyed all the commands of the LORD their God. They made two gold statues of calves and set up a sacred pole for Asherah; they also worshiped the stars and the god Baal. 17 They used magic and witchcraft and even sacrificed their own children. The Israelites were determined to do whatever the LORD hated. 18The LORD became so furious with the people of Israel that he allowed them to be carried away as prisoners.II Kings 17

And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,

68Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; For he hath visited and wrought redemption for his people, 69And hath raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of his servant David 70(As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets that have been from of old), 71Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us; 72To show mercy towards, our fathers, And to remember his holy covenant; 73The oath which he spake unto Abraham our father, 74To grant unto us that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemiesShould serve him without fear, 75In holiness and righteousness before him all our days. Luke 1

Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. I Peter 5:8

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside. 15He was teaching in their synagogues, and everyone praised him. 16He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, because of which He has anointed Me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent Me to proclaim deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to send forth in deliverance the oppressed, Luke 4:18

  1. THE POOR

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matt 5:3

  1. THE BLIND

Jesus said, “For judgment I have come into this world, so that the blind will see and those who see will become blind.” John 9:39

III. THE CAPTIVE / PRISONERS

The Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, 26and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will. II Timothy 2:26

  1. THE OPPRESSED / SLAVES

Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy? 3Send me your light… Psalm 43

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. Isa 9

There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil’s work. I John 3:8
