ACTS 19 NOTES

7The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes. Psalm 19

I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. Psalm 119:11 ESV

The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever. Isaiah 40:8 ESV

Acts 19:1-20

5 Steps to revival

I. They had a fear of God.

When this became known to the Jews and Greeks living in Ephesus, they were all seized with fear. Vs 17

“No one is righteous— not even one. No one is truly wise; no one is seeking God. All have turned away; all have become useless. No one does good, not a single one.” “Their talk is foul, like the stench from an open grave. Their tongues are filled with lies.” “Snake venom drips from their lips.” “Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.” “They rush to commit murder. Destruction and misery always follow them. They don’t know where to find peace.” They have no fear of God at all.”  Romans 3:10-18

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools c despise wisdom and instruction. Proverbs 1:7 NIV

“Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28 NLT

II. They honored the name of the Lord

the name of the Lord Jesus was held in high honor. Vs 17

“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, Matthew 6:9 NIV

O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Psalm 8:1 ESV

Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of his a holiness. Psalm 29:2 NIV

Sing the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people; praise his holy name. Psalm 30:4 NIV

Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together! Psalm 34:3 ESV

III. They believed in Jesus and confessed their sins.

Many of those who believed now came and openly confessed what they had done. Vs 18

When I refused to confess my sin, my body wasted away, and I groaned all day long. Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Finally, I confessed all my sins to you and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the LORD.” And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Therefore, let all the godly pray to you while there is still time, that they may not drown in the floodwaters of judgment. For you are my hiding place; you protect me from trouble. You surround me with songs of victory. Psalm 32: 3-7 NLT

If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. I John 1:8-9 ESV

IV. They got rid of their ungodly influence.

A number who had practiced sorcery brought their scrolls together and burned them publicly. When they calculated the value of the scrolls, the total came to fifty thousand drachmas. Vs 19

Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Get rid of the foreign gods you have with you, and purify yourselves and change your clothes.  3Then come, let us go up to Bethel, where I will build an altar to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and who has been with me wherever I have gone.” 4So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem. 5Then they set out, and the terror of God fell on the towns all around them so that no one pursued them. Genesis 35:2-5 NIV

Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you. Ephesians 4:31-32 NLT

Therefore, since we also have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let’s rid ourselves of every obstacle and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let’s run with endurance the race that is set before us, Hebrews 12:1 NASB

V. They effect of the Word of God in their lives was seen by all.

So the message about the Lord spread widely and had a powerful effect. Vs 20 NIV

Acts 18:23-41 The Riot in Ephesus

A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought in a lot of business for the craftsmen there. 25He called them together, along with the workers in related trades, and said: “You know, my friends, that we receive a good income from this business. 26And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all. 27There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; Vs 24-27
