PSALM SUNDAY 2024

After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30“Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.” 32Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. 33As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt? 34They replied, “The Lord needs it.”

Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Zecheriah 9:9 NIV

They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it. 36As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road. 37When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: 38“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”

7When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. 8Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields9Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted, “Hosanna! a ” “Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” Mark 11:7-9

The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; 23the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. 24The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad. (This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it. (Vs 24 NKJV) 25Lord, save us! Lord, grant us success!26Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. From the house of the Lord we bless you. b 27The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine on us. With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up c to the horns of the altar. Psalm 118:22-27 NIV

39Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!” 40“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.” 41As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it 42and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. 43The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. 44They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”

During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears. Hebrews 5:7

He came to his own people, and even they rejected him. John 1:11 NLT

He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Isaiah 53:3

I. Jesus weeps over those who don't recognize him because of what they will miss.

In verse 42 “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. Vs 42

Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered. 2Blessed is the one whose sin the Lord does not count against them. Psalm 32

Peace, peace, to those far and near,” says the Lord. “And I will heal them.” 20But the wicked are like the tossing sea, which cannot rest, whose waves cast up mire and mud. 21“There is no peace,” says my God, “for the wicked.” Isaiah 57:19-21 NIV

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27 NKJV

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6 NIV

Know Jesus, Know Peace - No Jesus, No Peace

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 NLT

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, Isaiah 26:3 ESV

II. Jesus weeps over those who have rejected Him because he knows what is coming.

43The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. 44They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, Vs 43-44

Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, 6“As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down.” Luke 21:5-6  They will not leave one stone on another, Vs 44

Say to them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign Lord, I take no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but rather that they turn from their ways and live. Turn! Turn from your evil ways! Why will you die, Ezekiel 33:11 NIV

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. 11Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives. II Peter 3:9-11 NIV

“I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness. Jeremiah 31:3 NIV

All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the LORD laid on him the sins of us all. Isaiah 53:6 NLT

And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, Hebrews 9:27 ESV

“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 41“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.

For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:17

III. Jesus weeps over those who did not recognize him today.

I’m calling you, For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.” Luke 19:10 NIV

Don’t put this off. As he reasoned with them about righteousness and self-control and the coming day of judgment, Felix became frightened. “Go away for now,” he replied. “When it is more convenient, I’ll call for you again.” Acts 24:25 NLT

Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. Proverbs 27:1 NIV

Your life is like the morning fog—it’s here a little while, then it’s gone.  James 4:14 NIV

For God says, “At just the right time, I heard you. On the day of salvation, I helped you.” Indeed, the “right time” is now. Today is the day of salvation. II Corinthians 6:2 NLT
