Topic: The Book of Acts Scripture: Acts 2:1–20

Acts II part 2

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues a as the Spirit enabled them. 5Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. 6When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. 7Utterly amazed,

The 3 miraculous signs and wonders.

I. The first supernatural event is Wind.

Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. Vs 2

The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” John 3:8 NIV  Psalm 18:10 NLT, Nahum 1:3 NIV, Job 38:1 ESV

II. The second supernatural event is Fire.

3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them.

Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.” 4When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” Exodus 3:3-4 NIV Exodus 13:21 ESV, Daniel 3:24-25 NKJV

III. The third supernatural event was tongues.

4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues a as the Spirit enabled them.

Mark 16:15-18I Corinthians 13.

IV. Are spiritual gifts for today?

Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.  9For we know in part and we prophesy in part.  10But when that which is perfect has comethen that which is in part will be done away. 11When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things.  12For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I shall know just as I also am known. I Corinthians 13:11-12 NKJV

it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.Hebrews 2:10 NIV

The law appointed high priests who were limited by human weakness. But after the law was given, God appointed his Son with an oath, and his Son has been made the perfect High Priest forever. Hebrews 7:28

V. Why did God give spiritual gifts to the church?

A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. I Corinthians 12:7 NLT

Since you are eager for gifts of the Spirit, try to excel in those that build up the church. I Corinthians 14:12

When you come together, everyone has a psalm or a teaching, a revelation, a tongue, or an interpretation. All of these must be done to build up the church. I Corinthians 14:26 BSB

VI. Do I have the gift of tongues?

Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? 30Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?  I Corinthians 12:28-30 AMP

A manifestation of the Spirit is given to each person for the common good: I Corinthians 12:7 CSB

We hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.”
Acts 2:11 NKJV

While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all those who were listening to the message [confirming God’s acceptance of Gentiles]. 45All the circumcised believers who came with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46For they heard them talking in [unknown] tongues (languages) and exalting and magnifying and praising God.  Acts 10:44-46 AMP

VII. Eagerly desire spiritual gifts.

Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy. I Corinthians 14:1 NIV

I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, b but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, c unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified. I Corinthians 14:5

I thank God that I speak in [unknown] tongues more than all of you; 19nevertheless, in public worship (THE CHURCH.) I would rather say five understandable words in order to instruct others, than ten thousand words in a tongue [which others cannot understand]. I Corinthians 14:18 AMP

If the whole church gathers together and all of you speak in [unknown] tongues, and outsiders or those who are not gifted [in spiritual matters] or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind? 24 But if all prophesy [foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people], and an unbeliever or outsider comes in, he is convicted [of his sins] by all, and he is called to account by all [because he can understand what is being said]; I Corinthians 14:23-24 AMP

God is Good!

So He said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.” Matthew 19:17 NKJV

Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above; it comes down from the Father of lights [the Creator and Sustainer of the heavens], in whom there is no variation [no rising or setting] or shadow cast by His turning [for He is perfect and never changes]. James 1:17 AMP

If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!” Luke 11:13
